TIM HORTON'S IS OVERCHARGING YOU EVERY DAY!!!

TIM HORTON'S IS OVERCHARGING YOU EVERY DAY! NOTICE THAT THEY DO NOT GIVE YOU A PAPER RECEIPT OF YOUR TRANSACTION.

BE EXTRA VIGILANT, WHETHER YOU ARE PAYING WITH CASH OR USING A QUICKPAY TIME CARD.

MY HUSBAND AND I USED TO VISIT TIM HORTON'S IN CANADA REGULARLY, AND THEN IN THE UNITED STATES. WE ROUTINELY SENT TIM HORTON GIFT CERTIFICATES TO FAMILY IN CANADA (WHICH IS WHERE I AM FROM) FOR BIRTHDAYS, ANNIVERSARIES, CHRISTMAS, PRETTY MUCH ALL OCCASIONS.

ON MARCH 11TH OF 2008, WE WERE ON THE WAY TO THE U.S., WHEN WE STOPPED TO EAT AT A TIM HORTON'S IN CORNWALL, JUST BEFORE ENTERING U.S. CUSTOMS AT MASSENA.

NOT ONLY DID THEY OVERCHARGE US, THEY REFUSED TO ADMIT THEY WERE WRONG. TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, THEY DID NOTHING TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM, WHEN WE CONTACTED THEM TO COMPLAIN.

HERE ARE OUR LETTERS OF COMPLAINT TO THEM:

Subject: Overcharge at one of your Cornwall Stores: Highway Robbery
Customer Service
Tim Horton's

To Whom It May Concern:

On March 11, 2008, my husband and I stopped at your Cornwall store (2690 Brookdale Ave., Cornwall), on our way back to the U.S.

We each ordered a sandwich combo. My husband's was the chicken salad combo and mine was the egg salad combo.

Each combo was advertised on a huge sign above the counter and included the sandwich, a medium coffee, and a donut for $4.35.

When I went to pay for the two combos, the charge was $13.45. I immediately advised the clerk that this price was far too high, pointing to the sign and adding that that pre-tax cost for both was only $8.70.

She repeatedly insisted that the price was correct. I kept insisting that it was far too high and that it should only be around $10.00 (with taxes) at the most. I then asked her what was the rate of tax and she said it was 8%. I have lived in Ontario since 1981 and know the current tax percentages, but had to ask what they were charging anyway, because she stated emphatically that the extra cost was because of taxes.

I asked to speak with someone else. A male came to the counter and, after taking a half-hearted, extremely rapid glance at the cash register, he also insisted the price was correct.

The clerk finally gave me a receipt, which I must state is something that I never receive at Tim Horton's and will now demand should I ever return to one again. I would like to know how many of your other stores are robbing customer's blind. My own particular experience is one of highway robbery. This is how the receipt is printed:

TIM HORTONS
2690 BROOKDALE AVE.
CORNWALL, ONTARIO
1 CH CLUB 4.59
WH. WHEAT
NO TST
2 1 DONUT 1.70
2 MD COFF 2.34
2 SANDW DL - 1.32
1 CH CLUB 4.59
WH WHEAT
NO TST
-----------------------
TXB1 11.90
GST .60
-----------------------
TXB3 11.90
-----------------------
PST1 .95
TOTL 13.45
CASH 13.45
GST# 123439986

SHIFT 2
#356 OUT
1171 15:30 #02 MAR.11'08 REG0003

BY MY CALCULATIONS, 2 COMBOS AT $4.35 EACH, PLUS TAXES, SHOULD BE CHARGED AS FOLLOWS:

2 Combos at $4.35 each $ 8.70
8% PST (8.70 X .08 = .6960) .70
5% GST (8.70 X .05 = .4350) .44
$ 9.84
$9.84 is what we should have been charged for these two combos and yet we were charged $13.45, which is an overcharge of $3.61.

HOW DO YOU JUSTIFY SUCH AN OVERCHARGE??? WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT THIS? IF YOU WISH, I CAN MAIL THE CASH REGISTER RECEIPT TO YOUR HEAD OFFICE. I OPTED TO CONTACT YOU FIRST VIA E-MAIL, TO EXPEDITE MATTERS.

I look forward to hearing from you, about this matter and how you plan to rectify it, as soon as possible.

Sincerely, S____ ____

Thanks for the heads-up. I have always thought they could be overcharging. I will demand a receipt from now on. If they DO overcharge me, then I will never go there again. They will lose thousands a year from me!

wish i had thought of posting a blog. i caught them doing the same to me about 3 months ago. i have not been back there since. i'll pass your blog to everyone i know so we can get the word out.

I caught them too (Toronto) and they refused to rectify it. If you are smart you will stay away from Timmy's. Go to Dunkin or one of the many other HONEST stores, just stay away from Timmy's. They'll rob you.

Thank God someone is spreading the word. They have been doing that for many years now. I stopped going there altogether. Pass the word. Let many people know and I will too.

You are right. I read your blog earlier then went to Tim Horton's with a couple of friends. I had everything put on my bill and sure enough we were overcharged. None of us are going back there. Thanks for the warning.

Now I know why they don't give you a sales slip. Thx. I wonder who's pocketing all that extra money?

Anonymous said...

So it IS true. I have suspected it for years. I shall pass your blog to everyone I know too just like the others who posted comments and said they would. The whole country should know about this.

ya they do overcharge customers. they did it to me too or tried to. i just walked out and left the order on the counter. most people don't bother to cheque probably because they are in a hurry these days. don't let them get away with it. i'll let people know too.

Anonymous said...

So that is why they don't give receipts. If you must go there and there refuse to give you a receipt then just walk out. They are probably trying to cheat you.

Anonymous said...

How do you think they grew so fast? They are cheating everyone.

Anonymous said...

i've wondered about that for years.

tHANKS wHISTLEBLOWER, FOREWARNED IS FOREARMED.

Anonymous said...

That makes sense. if you don't receive a bill or print out of the transaction how will you know you've been cheated. I'll help spread the word. You are doing a good thing letting us know.

Same thing happened to me at that store about a year ago. Coincidence? No way Jose. I've not gone to a Timmy's since and let everyone I know, know about it. I'll pass the link to your blog to everyone about 400 in my mail box.

been there too. ON is bad for that though I haven't been to other provinces so they may be just as bad.

Anonymous said...

I will keep a close eye on them. It did happen to me before.

Anonymous said...

don,t leave a tip
I found that timmy,s overcharge enough to make up for any tip you could give them. I also don,t like paying for three sandwiches and only getting two. at that rate they can retire early.

Anonymous said...

TDL is obviously covering up for dishonest franchisers who are cheating the public.

Anonymous said...

I have heard that they do that at many of their stores. Wonder if they are already doing it at their US stores?

Anonymous said...

why did you think they don't give receipts? I won't go there.

Anonymous said...

and to think that I thought I was the only one this happened to!

Anonymous said...

You might just as well as gotten the 3rd meal you seem to pay for.

Anonymous said...

keep an eye on them. if they aren't doing it in the states yet they probably will be soon

Anonymous said...

What an understatement that is. I stopped going there years ago for that very reason.

Anonymous said...

It would be easier to cheat with the quickpay card because there is no actual money exchange.

I work at a Tim Horton's in ON. Yes they do overcharge at least the one where I work. People should definitely beware because the cash registers are programmed to overcharge in many if not all of the stores. They count on people being in a big hurry. They really nab them at the drive-thru windows.

I caught them overcharging me a long time ago at that Cornwall store. They did the smae thing then too. i havaen't gone back since. Kudos for lettign others know about themn. I'll pass your link on to everyone I knowo too.

Anonymous said...

i work at the same timmy's as anon. it is true that they overcharge on purpose. we can't say which store we work at cause we would get fired but it is true.

There was an interesting story about Tim Horton's on Sympatico.MSN.com today. Here it is:

Tim Hortons trouble brewing: Customer scolded over food for homeless woman
THE CANADIAN PRESS
May 23, 2008
TORONTO - More trouble is brewing for Tim Hortons just two weeks after an employee in London, Ont., was fired for giving a child a free Timbit.
A woman in Toronto ran afoul of a downtown Tim Hortons outlet after buying breakfast for a homeless woman.
An employee was reportedly unhappy the homeless woman stayed in the coffee shop to eat, telling the Good Samaritan that homeless people "make a mess."
A Tim Hortons spokeswoman said in an e-mail that the homeless woman had been disruptive in the store before.
Rachel Douglas wrote: "Anyone who poses a risk to a safe customer environment is not welcome in the stores, especially if they have a history of making threatening disturbances."
Two weeks ago, a single mother of four was fired from a London Tim Hortons franchise for giving away a 16-cent Timbit, although she was quickly rehired.

You should check out "Morton's Musings" on Blogspot. He covered the story about the London ON single mom who was fired from Tim Horton's for giving a TimBit to a child. Even if you don't wish to check out that story, you should check out his Blog anyway. He is a lawyer in Toronto and covers other stories as well.
